How To Edit The Course Page In Squarespace

Creating online courses in Squarespace is a great way to share your knowledge and connect with students. If you're ready to start customizing your course pages but aren’t sure how, this guide has you covered. Let’s walk through everything from setting up your course to editing the layout, creating pricing plans, and managing paywalls.

Course Pages are considered a Digital Product in Squarespace, if you are unsure of which to use I go through your options in my blog post about how to create gated content in Squarespace using digital products.

What Are Course Pages in Squarespace?

Course Pages are a type of digital product in Squarespace, perfect for selling educational content. They let you create structured lessons and chapters, set up pricing plans, and even design a paywall. Whether you're offering free or paid content, Course Pages give you the flexibility to organize your course materials in a student-friendly way.

Adding a Course Page to Your Website

To get started, navigate to your Squarespace site editor.

  1. Click the plus (+) icon to add a new page.

  2. Select Course from the list of options.

You’ll now see the structure of your course section with three main parts:

  • The Course Overview Page, which acts as the landing page for your course.

  • The Course Content Section, where you'll add your chapters and lessons.

  • The Pricing Plans, which allow you to set different payment options.

There's also a gear icon in the editor where you can edit things like the course name, URL, and SEO.

Customizing the Course Overview Page

Your Course Overview Page is where students land to learn more about your course. You can leave this page open for anyone to view or restrict it behind a paywall. By default, this page includes a course description, a progress bar, and thumbnails of lessons. Here’s how you can edit it:

  1. Add or Remove Sections: Above or below the default overview section, use the "Add Section" option to build out additional content.

  2. Customizing Details: Choose what information appears — for example, turn the course description or lesson thumbnails on or off.

  3. Design Options: Switch between different layouts like grid or list views. Adjust buttons and spacing to suit your style.

Remember that the mobile version for the default overview section is already optimized. However, if you add new sections, you’ll need to edit those for mobile separately.

Editing Course Content: Chapters and Lessons

Think of chapters as folders that organize your lessons. If you only have a few lessons, you can skip chapters entirely.

  • Adding Content: Create chapters and lessons within the Course Content section. Drag and drop lessons to rearrange them quickly.

  • Deleting Content: Deleting a chapter will also delete all its lessons.

  • Individual Lesson Settings: Click the ellipsis next to a lesson to edit details like the title, excerpt, custom URL, thumbnail, and attached video.

If your lesson doesn’t need a video, you can simply toggle the video option off. You can also add regular Squarespace content blocks like text, images, or downloadable PDFs to your lessons.

Working With Pricing Plans

You can offer your course for free or set up paid access. Adding Pricing Plans enables paywalls, limiting content availability to enrolled students.

Setting Up a Pricing Plan

  1. Go to the Pricing Plan section and click Create a Pricing Plan.

  2. Choose between a fixed amount (a one-time fee), a subscription (recurring payments), or a free plan for select users.

  3. Add a name, description, benefits (up to five), and price.

You can also bundle multiple courses into one pricing plan, which is perfect if you're offering packages.

Managing the Paywall

Adding a pricing plan automatically creates a paywall. You can customize the headline, description, and visibility of pricing plans on this page. Choose whether the paywall applies to:

  • The entire course (Overview Page and content).

  • Only the course content.

If you'd like, you can also set individual lessons as "public preview," even within a paywalled course. This option is great for letting potential students view a sample of your content.

Adding Sign-Up Options With Digital Product Blocks

You can use Digital Product Blocks on any page of your Squarespace site to allow sign-ups for your course.

  1. Add a Digital Product Block to your desired page.

  2. Click the pencil icon, then select your course’s pricing plan.

  3. Choose what to display (like benefits or descriptions) or hide unnecessary elements to simplify the block.

This feature is handy for creating custom sales pages or adding sign-up buttons to your homepage. If you're only using the block for a button, toggle everything else off and keep the button visible.

In Conclusion

Squarespace makes it simple to create and manage a professional-looking course. From customizing your Course Overview Page to organizing lessons, setting up pricing plans, and controlling paywalls, the tools are designed to fit your needs. Whether you're offering free resources or building a paid learning platform, the detailed features give you total control.
